IBP career day: Per Aspera Ad Astra

Young researchers of the Institute of Biophysics (IBP) of the Czech Academy of Sciences are inviting students and postdocs to IBP career day: Per Aspera Ad Astra focused on future career possibilities in the academic and industrial spheres. During the event, four outstanding scientists will share stories of their scientific journeys and will lead popular round table discussions on various topics.

Confirmed speakers:

Roberto Fernández is a scientist-turned-entrepreneur with a PhD in chemistry and experience spanning academia, biotech, and startups. After roles in management and technology transfer at i&i Prague, he joined LAM-X, where he advanced product development and innovation in light-activated antimicrobial technologies. Now COO, he leads operations, partnerships, and the creation of new applications, combining his scientific expertise with business acumen to bring impactful healthcare solutions to market.

Monika Čechová is an assistant professor at Masaryk University in Brno. She was part of the team that sequenced the first complete human Y chromosome and now works on how centromeres and telomeres are inherited across generations. With a background spanning applied informatics, bioinformatics, and a PhD in Biology from Penn State, she spent two years as a postdoctoral scholar at UC Santa Cruz in the lab of Karen Miga, co-founder of the Telomere-to-Telomere consortium. Last year, she received the Czexpats in Science Award.

Clément Lafon Placette is an associate professor at Charles University. His research team studies the factors impacting plant reproduction evolution. After a PhD in France and a postdoc in Sweden, he established his group in Prague in 2018. Hi interests (and role) include teaching, and he focuses on methods that improve the learning of higher-level thinking skills. He has been facilitating workshops on emotional work and embodiment for 4 years in parallel, and took training in therapy.

Ondřej Hovorka is CEO and co-owner of SVEN BioLabs s.r.o. He began his career at the Institute of Microbiology, CAS, where he spent nearly two decades as a researcher. Building on his expertise, he transitioned into leadership roles in life sciences companies. As Managing Director at BIO-PORT Europe,
and later as CEO of SoftFlow Biosciences, he gained extensive experience in biotech development and management. Nowadays, he combines deep scientific knowledge with entrepreneurial drive to deliver innovative solutions to the research and healthcare communities.
